MFA- Application Process
Studying dance in graduate
school was never something I considered. Honestly, I didn’t even know a Master’s
in Fine Arts (MFA) degree existed. I happened to sit next Amber Kao, an alum
from the University of Michigan’s MFA dance program, at a mutual friend’s
wedding (Congrats on 1 year Amy and Jeremy!). Once we began talking about our common passion for dance, she
encouraged me to apply for Michigan’s program. “What have I got to lose?” I
thought. If nothing else, I wanted to use the application process to help develop
my writing skills to help me prepare for my "next" graduate school application. I also needed a push to create the dance concept videos I’ve been brainstorming
for years. So, even if I wasn't accept, I knew that simply
applying would help me grow. So, I decided to apply!

The application process involved
two phases. The first phase included submission of three essays, three videos of
my choreographed works, an official transcript, and three letters of
recommendation. If selected, you are then invited to the second phase, a two-day
in-person interview process. This second phase included teaching a sample class
for beginner students, taking two technique classes, performing a 4-5 minute
solo, Q&A with the entire faculty, and a one-on-one interview with a professor.

As crazy as the whole process was, I couldn’t have done it without the help of
so many people. THANK
YOU
Cheron Massenberg, aka “BossLady,” Suave, and Professor Angela Odoms-Young for
their letters of recommendation. Big thanks to Carrie Lin, Sarah Ilie, and Yoon
Sun Pyun (my older sisters) for editing my papers. My sincerest appreciation for
my parents, Dale Lin and Sandy Chang, for their unending support. Thanks to
Amber Kao for answering all of my questions during the application and
interview process. Special thanks to all my teammates from Hip Hop ConnXion,
Gigi Torres, and my friends in Chicago for their constant support and prayers. Last but
not least, thank you Lord Jesus for continuing to guide my every step.
